Subject Introduction and Features

The overall curriculum aims are to develop in students:

  1. the ability to think critically and creatively, to conceptualise, inquire and reason mathematically, and to use mathematics to formulate and solve problems in daily life as well as in mathematical contexts and other disciplines;
  2. the ability to communicate with others and express their views clearly and logically in mathematical language;
  3. the ability to manipulate numbers, symbols and other mathematical objects; 
  4. number sense, symbol sense, spatial sense, measurement sense and the capacity to appreciate structures and patterns; and 
  5. a positive attitude towards the learning of mathematics and an appreciation of the aesthetic nature and cultural aspect of mathematics.

 

Course Objectives

  • Adapt the Mathematics curriculum and implement differentiated instruction to cater to the diverse learning potentials and needs of students.
  • Promote subject-based reading to help students understand the connections between Mathematics and real-life contexts.
  • Enrich students' Mathematics learning experiences to strengthen their generic skills, positive values, and proactive attitudes.
  • Establish after-school learning classes, focusing on consolidating academic foundations for junior secondary levels and reinforcing public examination strategies for senior secondary levels.
  • Nominate students across all levels to represent the school in various competitions, enabling them to witness their own progress and gain a sense of achievement through competition and exchange.

The Senior Secondary Mathematics curriculum is strategically designed to provide a robust foundation for students' multifaceted development, encompassing tertiary education, vocational training, and career advancement.

Beyond the core Compulsory Part, the Extended Part is specifically tailored for students who require advanced mathematical knowledge and skills for their future academic pursuits or professional requirements. It also serves as an enriched elective for students with a strong interest and the necessary aptitude to excel through further mathematical exploration.

Rummikub Competition - a fun and educational competition that enhances logical reasoning, observation, and decision-making skills through number permutations and combinations!

S1 Mathematics Orientation Day – Through various math games, students learn about mathematical knowledge beyond the textbook, enhancing their interest in learning mathematics.
